It may not seem like it from this past weekend, but New Jerseyans don’t drink much beer. Indeed, New Jersey ranks 49 out of 50 states and the District of Columbia when it comes to per capita beer consumption, according to the Beer Institute, the organization that represents the $246.5 billion beer industry in the United States.

New Jerseyans over 21 years of age drank an average of 22.2 gallons of beer in 2012, which translated into about 4.7 million gallons as a whole. In terms of sheer size of market, that made New Jersey the 13th largest.

Apparently, the New York metropolitan area has less of a taste for beer than almost anywhere else in the country: Utah ranked 51; Connecticut, 50; and New York, 48. North Dakota, New Hampshire, Montana, South Dakota, and Wisconsin are ranked one to five, respectively.
