NJ Turnpike ranks first in tolls collected

The New Jersey Turnpike collected $992 million in tolls last year, making it what ToolRoadsNews called the “most profitable” toll road in North America.

New Jerseyans in the know, however, are aware that this is a dubious distinction: Even though after operating expenses the Turnpike raked in $614 million in 2012, almost all of that sum has already been spoken for because the state has bonded the next 30 years of toll receipts. That means very little, if any, of that money can be thought of as “profit” or be used for the road’s upkeep.

The road with the second-highest revenues in North America is the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which collected $781 million in 2012. Canada’s 407 ETR is third on the list with $734 million, followed by the New York Thruway at $631 million, Florida Turnpike at $440 million, and the Garden State Parkway at $402 million.
