Number of the Day: 59%

Gov. Chris Christie continues to have very high favorability ratings, particularly when compared with his Democratic challenger state Sen. Barbara Buono. Some 59 percent of those asked said they would vote for him, in the most recent Rutgers Eagleton opinion poll.

Only 27 percent of those polled said they would vote for Buono. Even 45 percent of those who said they voted for President Barack Obama last year said they would vote to reelect Christie.

Christie got high marks from those who cited taxes, spending, and the economy as the most important issue facing the state, while Buono just edged him out for those who cited education as the biggest issue (43 percent vs. 44 percent).

Despite this, Christie gets high disapproval ratings from those polled when asked what they think of his job on the economy and jobs and taxes. More disapproved of his performance in those areas than approved. However, 86 percent of the public say they approve of his handling of the Sandy recovery, and he gets 51 percent approval for crime and the state budget.
