Number of the Day: 69

June 10, 2013 | Number of The Day

A record 69 women will be on the November ballot as major party nominees this year, with a total of 67 running for the state legislature, one (Barbara Buono) at the top of the Democratic ticket for governor, and one (Kim Guadagno) running for reelection as lieutenant governor on the Republican side.

This is a big deal for New Jersey, which has had no women representing the Garden State on the federal level since Rep. Marge Roukema retired in 2003.

Fifteen major party candidates for the New Jersey Senate are women, nine Democrats and six Republicans. In the state Assembly, there are 52 female candidates for the 80-seat lower house.

This is the highest number of female candidates ever, beating the 65 female major party candidates in 2011.
