At the end of 2012, there were 52,398 children from 26,169 families under supervision by the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency (formerly the Division of Youth and Family Services). These included 7,361 children that have been placed in foster homes.

Of children receiving services, 18 percent are two years old or younger; 18 percent are three to five; 22 percent are six to nine; 28 percent are between 10 and 15; and the rest are 16 years old and older. The gender split is basically 50-50.

Of the 52,398 children, 32 percent are African-American; 28 percent are white; 21 percent are Hispanic; and 17 percent are considered “undetermined non-Hispanic.”
