Number of the Day: 41

More than 90 percent of New Jersey school districts have abandoned the idea of holding school board elections in the spring: 501 districts have now decided to put their candidates for school board on the November ballot.

That leaves only 41 districts to hold school elections on April 16. They range from tiny Allamuchy, Norwood, and Rockaway Borough to Newark, New Brunswick, and Paterson.

Although the idea of November school elections was to increase voter participation, two other factors seem to be driving the change. The municipality or school system do not have to bear the cost of a second general election each year. And school systems that stay within the 2 percent cap on budget increases do not have to put their budgets up for a vote if they move the school elections to November.
