Most New Jerseyans want Gov. Chris Chrisite to accept federal funds to cover more people with Medicaid, according to a new poll by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. The poll showed that 70 percent of registered voters say the state should accept the federal Medicaid funds available under the Affordable Care Act, which will pay for 100 percent coverage of about 233,000 uninsured adults beginning in 2014, eventually decreasing to about 90 percent.

Only 21 percent of state voters say the money should be turned down, leaving vulnerable populations uninsured.

Support for the move came from all ages, races, and income levels. Democrats and Independents support it, although Republicans with a margin of 40 percent in favor, 47 percent against, wanted the state to reject the money.

The poll also found that 46 percent of respondents had a close friend or family member without health insurance, and 35 percent said they had a close friend or family member that has been insured through Medicaid.
