As with the country as a whole, 2012 was the warmest year on record in New Jersey, with an average annual temperature of 56 degrees, according to state climatologist David Robinson.

Indeed, since 1895, when standard records began to be kept, three of the top five warmest calendar years included 2010, 2011, and 2012 and nine of the 10 warmest years have occurred since 1990. The 56-degree average is 2.8 degrees above the 1981-to-2010 mean.

This is the second year in a row that a major climate record has been broken. 2011 had the record for greatest amount of precipitation. But 2012 was drier than normal and ranks as the eighth-driest year of the past 30.
