New Jersey had 56 reported illnesses from multistate foodborne outbreaks since January 2011, according to The Pew Charitable Trusts from data supplied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The largest outbreak comprised 42 reported illnesses from a strain of salmonella poisoning in raw tuna. Other illnesses were due to salmonella poisoning in Turkish pinenuts, cantaloupe, peanuts, and dry dog food, among other incidents. There were three cases of Listeria found in cheese.

The Pew Health Group said that cases listed on its website are only a small fraction of total foodborne illnesses and that the CDC estimates that one in six Americans suffers from food illnesses each year, resulting in 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths.
