Law enforcement officers face a higher potential rate for suicide due to job stress and access to firearms. After a rash of police suicides in the 1990s, the state created a crisis intervention program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry called Cop2Cop, which has since averted more than 191 potential suicides and taken at least 40,000 calls.

Cop2Cop, which is based in Piscataway, has trained more than 15,000 officers in suicide prevention. Corrections officers have significantly higher rates of suicide than other types of law enforcement, so the organization has created a customized suicide prevention course that as been given to more than 4,000 corrections officers in the state.

According to Cop2Cop, the number of corrections officers who committed suicide has significantly diminished in the past year as a result.
