Number of the Day: 16,000

November 8, 2012 | Number of The Day

There are approximately 16,000 crew members working on restoring power around the state, according to Gov. Chris Christie. They had been scheduled to complete restoration by Saturday, but with a new storm hitting New Jersey last night, these crews may be further stretched.

In the aftermath of Sandy, crew members have been working 16 hour days, and New Jersey-based crews have been joined by lineman from across the country. Energy Secretary Steven Chu estimated last week that 64,000 lineman were working in the region, which included New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia.

That does not include the estimated 5,100 Federal Emergency Management Act personnel (2,000 in New Jersey) and thousands of forestry workers, as well as national guard and law enforcement personnel who have been deployed in the state.
