The state Attorney General’s office has already issued about 100 subpoenas to businesses accused of price gouging in wake of Hurricane Sandy. Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said his office has received about 1,200 complaints from consumers, primarily about alleged price gouging by gas stations, convenience stores, hardware stores, and hotels.

The state is warning residents to avoid contractors who are not licensed or registered. “We are urging New Jersey’s consumers and municipalities to beware of fly-by-night, incompetent, and dishonest contractors who will seek to profit from the misery of those affected by this storm,” said Chiesa.

The state provides a mobile Professional Lookup app that lists 42,000 registered contractors.
