Joining the top ranks of a New Jersey County Sheriff’s office must be an easy — but quite lucrative — posting, since 46 high-ranking officers have already retired from New Jersey government service and now collect both a state pension and their regular salaries, according to NJ Watchdog.org.

On average, each of the 17 sheriffs or undersheriffs collects $179,000 a year — $102,000 in salary and $72,000 from law enforcement pensions. The highest paid is Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino, who earns $138,000 from his current job and $129,984 from his pension as the former Emerson Township police chief. The practice occurs in 17 of the state’s 21 counties.
