Oyster farming is seeing a resurgence in New Jersey, and the state has set aside about 107 10-acre lots through the Bureau of Shellfisheries for the production of aquaculture on the Delaware Bay, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Twelve oyster farmers have already secured leases in the Aquaculture Development Zones, and the state expects that one of four zones will double New Jersey’s current aquaculture, which is currently valued at $6.6 million over the next two years.

The state DEP worked with the Department of Agriculture to obtain permits for the zones and so they are available for use by aquaculture farmers.

Products captured through these zones will be marked with the Jersey Seafood logo, just like the Jersey Fresh logo is used on farm produce.
