New Jerseyans die more frequently from colon cancer than the average American does, since there are about 18.6 deaths per 100,000 each year from the disease, according to, a website of the Kaiser Family Foundation. The U.S. average is 16.9 per 100,000.

Despite this stark statistic, New Jerseyans have a higher rate of colonoscopies than the national average, 65.6 percent vs. 64.2 percent. Early detection of colon cancer via colonoscopies is considered essential in order to prevent death.
