New Jersey boasts two out of 20 selected by Food & Wine Magazine as “America’s Best Boardwalks.” Both Atlantic City and Seaside Heights made the list. Atlantic City’s 5.5-mile boardwalk, cited as the longest in the world, was credited with its star-chef restaurants and saltwater taffy. Seaside Heights was praised for its two amusement parks, white-sand beaches, custards, and Trenton-style pizza, as well as the site of TV show “Jersey Shore.”

Alas, Atlantic City was beaten out as the top boardwalk in the nation by Santa Cruz, CA, which also has a long history. Two of the rides at its amusement park, which opened in 1907, are recognized as national historic landmarks. Other boardwalks making the cut were Navy Pier in Chicago, Ocean City, MD, the recently built Kemah, TX, boardwalk near Houston, and Venice Beach, CA. Seaside Heights was ranked 12 and Rehoboth Beach, DE, was ranked just behind at 13.
