Although New Jersey ranks 16th among states for traffic fatalities due to drunk driving and has somewhat stiff penalties for the offense, there were 19,841 three-time DUI offenders in the state last year. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) found that even more incredibly, there were 1,681 five-time DUI offenders in the Garden State in 2011.
Drunk driving was related to 27 percent of all traffic fatalities, which totaled
153 last year, up 4.8 percent from 2010. MADD also cites statistics that show nearly 30 percent of those underage said they had used alcohol in the past month and nearly 19 percent said they had been guilty of binge drinking.
