Number of the Day: 1 billion watts

May 16, 2012 | Number of The Day

Although the future of New Jersey’s solar industry remains in question, PJM Interconnection, the operator of the regional power grid, announced that the grid now has 1 billion watts, otherwise known as 1 gigawatt, of solar power installed. The growth in solar power in the region is being led by New Jersey.

One gigawatt of solar is enough to power 800,000 or 1 million homes. Solar power doubled in growth in each of the past two years and continues to grow.
