Spotlight Podcast: Atlantic City Smoking Ban

Atlantic City outlaws outdoor smoking, but it's still OK to light up in the casino

This week the Atlantic City Council voted unanimously to restrict outdoor smoking at playgrounds and ballfields, and NJ Spotlight’s Beth Fitzgerald sat down with Newsworks New Jersey to discuss the irony of a ban on outdoor smoking in the resort town, where smoking is permitted in casinos by virtue of an exemption that the gaming industry lobbied hard for and won during passage of the 2006 Smoke-Free Air Act.

But times are changing: the new Revel casino opened this month as a totally smoke-free facility, and anti-smoking advocates hope Revel will encourage other casinos to follow suit. If the Atlantic City Council gives final approval to the ordinance on April 25, it will join 141 municipalities across the state that have enacted either a total or partial ban on outdoor smoking in public facilities.
