Number of the Day: $21 million

March 27, 2012 | Number of The Day

Although it is not primarily thought of as an apple-growing state, New Jersey’s revenue from the keep-the-doctor-away fruit is a healthy $21 million annually, according to the state Department of Agriculture. New Jersey ranks fourth in the nation in blueberry production, bringing in $94.7 million each year as well as fourth in peach production, which brings in $30 million annually. With temperatures approaching freezing levels over the next few day, the state Department of Environmental Protection is working with the state Department of Agriculture to allow farmers to use controlled open burning and other options to protect their crops from being damaged.
