New Jersey ranked sixth among states with the highest share of overall traffic fatalities in crashes involving at least one driver over the age of 65, according to The Road Information Project (TRIP), a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit focused on surface transportation issues. In 2010, New Jersey had 122 fatal accidents involving a driver over the age of 65, which was 21 percent of all fatal accidents in the state.

This shouldn’t come as a complete surprise, given New Jersey’s density and number of highway accidents. New Jersey also has one of the highest number of drivers over the age of 65 – more than 1 million. That’s 17 percent of Garden State drivers.
