There were 28,480 abortions performed in New Jersey in 2008, according to Kaiser State Health Facts. New Jersey ranked 15th in the nation, behind such states as New York, Delaware, Connecticut, Florida, Rhode Island, Nevada, Connecticut, Kansas, Washington, Massachusetts, and Virginia.

States such as Illinois, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, and Pennsylvania have equal or higher abortion rates.

Of those who obtained abortions in the Garden State that year, 45.8 percent were white, 35.2 percent were black, and 19.7 percent were Hispanic. By far the largest age cohort were those women between the ages of 20 and 29 (56 percent), while the second-largest age group were those between 30 and 39 (24 percent). Women up to age 19 made up 17 percent of the abortions performed, while 4 percent involved women over the age of 40.
