Healthcare is one industry that’s not only stable but also growing, even in the Garden State. Acute care hospitals provide the state with 140,000 jobs, according to the 2011 NJ Hospital Economic Impact Report from the New Jersey Hospital Association, 114,000 of them full-time positions.
The report says that hospitals’ total economic activity grew by $40 million to $18.6 billion in 2010, which included $7.6 billion in employee salaries and $2.4 billion in services purchased from other New Jersey businesses. Hospital employees contributed $420 million in state income taxes. The hospitals also provided $1.3 billion in charity care to New Jersey’s uninsured.
