New Jersey is tied with New York as 46th in the nation for gun deaths, according to the Violence Policy Center, a nonprofit group based in Washington, D.C., that works against gun violence. That means that only Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Hawaii had a higher gun rate death than New Jersey in 2008.

The center argues that the states with the lowest gun ownership rates and strongest gun laws have the fewest deaths. New Jersey had 4.95 gun deaths per 100,000 in 2007, while Alaska, the state with the highest rate, had 20.64 deaths per 100,000. Only 11.3 percent of New Jerseyans have guns in the home, while 60.6 percent of Alaskans do. Alaska was joined by Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Wyoming in the top five states with the highest rate of gun deaths.

Pennsylvania ranked 25th, with 10.70 gun deaths per 100,000.
