Today’s rush-hour commuters will be the first to rack up $9.50 on E-Z Pass to use any of the New Jersey-to-New York bridges and tunnels. Those paying cash will shell out $12. Commuters will see a $0.75 increase in tolls each year until 2015. Fares on the PATH will increase $0.25 to $2.00, but riders will also pay an additional $0.25 for each of the next four years.
The fare hikes are necessary to underwrite a $25.1 billion, 10-year capital plan, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and were approved by Governors Chris Christie and Andrew Cuomo. In the next four years, the Port Authority says it plans to replace the George Washington Bridge suspender cables, rehabilitate the Lincoln Tunnel Helix and raise the Bayonne Bridge, in addition to completing the World Trade Center.
