The state Office of the Attorney General’s Division of Law scored significant success through litigation in 2010, when state attorneys obtained $195 million in judgments and recoveries. That was a 31 percent increase over 2009. Environmental litigations obtained $81.4 million. The largest judgment was $20.25 million due to the 2004 Athos Oil Spill, when the Athos ran aground in the Delaware Bay and polluted both the bay and the Atlantic Coast.

Other large recoveries included $39 million related to securities, consumer and insurance fraud and $21 million collected as a result of debt recovery actions.

The Division of Law has about 500 attorneys; in 2010, it handled more than 39,000 legal matters, resolving more than 20,000. There were more than 1,200 trials and 1,100 administration hearings during 2010. The division also presented or addressed more than 1,700 appeals, prevailing in about 81 percent of them.
