Last month wasn’t just New Jersey’s wettest August in history — it was the wettest month ever recorded in the state, which has been keeping tabs on the weather since 1895. The 16.64 inches of rain that fell last month — only partially due to Hurricane Irene — was 12.43 inches above the 1981-2010 average. It far surpassed the previous record of 11.98 inches recorded in 2005.
August wasn’t just wet, it was also hot. The monthly average of 74.1 degrees was the 28th warmest in the past 117 years. It was also 0.7 degrees warmer than the average between 1981-2011.
