Grandparents Day, which has been designated September 11, was meant to reflect and honor those who are in the lives of a second generation. Yesterday, however, was dominated by a different remembrance. So today, in recognition of the state’s grandparents, it’s interesting to note that about two percent of New Jerseyans, or 178,381 people, are grandparents living in the same home with grandchildren under 18 years of age, according to the U.S. Census Bureau
Of those, 51,671 are responsible for their support. The majority of grandparents providing support, 34,395 people, are married. And 33,391, or 66 percent, are women.
