There are 1,220 inmates serving life sentences in New Jersey’s prisons, or about 5 percent of the prison population. Of those, 62 prisoners are serving life without parole. There are 23 female inmates, out of 825, serving life sentences, but they are all eligible for parole.
In total, New Jersey houses 25,139 inmates in 13 correctional institutions. The largest portion — 44 percent — are serving five years or less. Thirty-four percent are serving sentences greater than 10 years, About 4,353 are serving sentences in youth correctional facilities, and the vast majority of those have sentences of five years or less.
