Between 11,000 and 16,000 New Jersey women suffer from post-partum depression every year, according to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. The exact cause is unknown, but alterations in hormone levels, together with lack of sleep, change in routine and other stresses, can cause the disorder. Severe cases can have long-term adverse affects on mother and child.

New Jersey is a leader in offering resources to women with postpartum depression. It is the only state that mandates all hospitals and birthing centers screen for the disorder. New mothers, as well as women who have suffered a miscarriage, ended a pregnancy or stopped breastfeeding can all be affected.
