A recent poll of New Jerseyans’ attitudes to higher gas prices showed that 84 percent support windmills off the New Jersey coast. The poll, conducted two weeks ago by The Polling Institute of Monmouth University, asked 807 state residents what they thought of various energy issues.

Respondents overwhelmingly support (85 percent) requiring that new cars get higher gas mileage. They also are in favor of putting a windfall profit tax on oil companies (66 percent), and by a very slim margin (52 percent) support drilling for oil and gas off the New Jersey coast They seem dead-set against building another nuclear power plant in the Garden State.

Recent worldwide events do seem to have dampened the enthusiasm for both nuclear energy and oil and gas drilling. The Polling Institute asked the same questions of New Jerseyans in 2008, when 41 percent of respondents said they would support another nuclear power plant and 56 percent were fine with drilling off the coast.
