The watershed of Barnegat Bay is 30 percent developed, the threshold at which scientists consider a watershed degraded, according to Environment New Jersey.
Monmouth County is just under 50 percent developed, according to the environmental advocacy group. Cape May is at 20 percent, and Atlantic county is at about 18 percent.
Those statistics are also underscored in a recent report issued by the Barnegat Bay Partnership entitled “State of the Bay Report 2011.” It says that while the bay’s water quality has remained about the same, with somewhat fewer beach closings but more algal blooms, the bay’s water supply has seriously degraded as the population has grown.
