Number of the Day: 148,940

That is the projected number of megawatts that will be needed to meet peak demand on the hottest day of the summer, when the regional power grid, the PJM Interconnection, must deliver the most power to keep the lights on. If the projection proves true, it would set a record for the nation’s largest power grid. The previous record use of electricity occurred in 2006, when demand climbed to 144,644 megawatts. One megawatt is enough to power about 800 homes.
