New Jersey’s local public libraries may have taken a funding hit during the economic crisis, but that hasn’t slowed business. The state’s 300 libraries saw 51,205,694 visits in 2009, an 11 percent increase from 2007. It also saw a double-digit bump in circulation, with 63,959,292 books, CDs and other items taken out by 1,187,507 cardholders. The annual report doesn’t say anything about fines for those items not brought back on time, but lest one wonder about the cost, the average pricetag of a book bought by libraries that year was $16.30.
