Number of the Day: 15,000

Groups opposing a controversial telecommunications bill (S-2664) logged an estimated 15,000 calls into offices of state senators in an effort to prevent lawmakers from giving final approval to the legislation yesterday.

It worked, for now.

The bill, touted as spurring economic development in New Jersey, would essentially strip any remaining regulation of telecom and cable TV companies. Foes enlisted Sen. Bob Smith (D-Middlesex) to offer up a slew of amendments that would retain some state oversight. Whether those amendments make it into the bill remains to be seen.
