New Jerseyans may be burdened with property taxes but 30 percent of homeowners no longer have a mortgage payment, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Housing Survey. The Bureau recently released data for northern New Jersey and the Philadelphia metropolitan area and both regions cited the 30 percent statistic. (The Philadelphia metro area includes Camden, Burlington and Gloucester Counties.)
The two ends of New Jersey also agree they like their homes — each rating them highly. In the northern part of the state, 27 percent gave their homes the “best” rating, while in the Philadelphia area it was 29 percent. The housing stock is about 50 years old, as the median year given in North Jersey for homes being built is 1962; 1960 in the Philly region. At least half of the homes in both parts of the state have central air conditioning.
The differences? Houses are generally bigger in the southern part of the state, but they seem to be noisier, since 30 percent in the Philadelphian region cited traffic noise as a problem, compared with 22 percent in northern New Jersey. And while 23 percent of those in the south worry about crime, only 15 percent in north Jersey do.
Nevertheless, 92 percent of those in both regions are satisfied with their police protection.
