Number of the Day: 11

As spring nears and our thoughts turn to sunshine after the long, snowy winter, it’s good to know that the National Park Service manages 11 sites in the Garden State.

The sites, whose proximity makes them easy to visit, range from trails (Appalachian and New Jersey Coast Heritage) to recreation areas (Delaware Water Gap and Gateway National, also known as Sandy Hook) to historical parks (Morristown Historical Park and the newly renovated Thomas Edison Historical Park). Three river sections — the Middle Delaware, the Lower Delaware and Great Egg Harbor — are managed by the federal government. The Pinelands National Reserve was the country’s first. And Ellis Island, a national monument, is shared by New York and New Jersey.
