Number of the Day: $613 million

February 11, 2011 | Number of The Day

The New Jersey Department of Education provides $613 million in funding for preschool education, the vast majority of it going to the state’s 31 Abbott school districts. That’s an increase of $17,236 over the 2010 school year. Much of the funding formula is determined by the previous year’s enrollments.

Republicans in the state Senate are said to be advocating cutting that funding in half and using it to soften budget cuts in suburban districts. It remains unclear if this will be part of the state Republican agenda until Gov. Chris Christie unveils his budget proposals in the next few weeks.
