Women owned 27.3 percent of New Jersey businesses in 2007, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners. That would be 213,418 firms out of the 782,028 registered businesses in the state.

That percentage was lower than the nationwide average of 28.7 percent. The states with the highest percentage of women-owned businesses were Maryland (32.6 percent), New Mexico (31.7 percent), Hawaii (31 percent), Georgia (30.9 percent) and Illinois (30.5 percent). At the other end of the spectrum were South Dakota (22.1 percent), Idaho (23.5 percent) and Arkansas (24.5 percent.)

Nationwide, female-owned businesses generated $1.2 trillion in receipts or 3.9 percent of all receipts. Companies owned equally by men and women generated $1.3 trillion or 4.2 percent of the total.
