According to the New Jersey Department of Education, weapons incidents in public schools declined 15 percent in 2008 – 2009 over the year before, reflecting a continuing drop during the past three years. The overall trend of violence, vandalism and weapons was down 3 percent over the same period.
A tally of incidents by the DOE indicates there were 1,002 weapons offenses in 2008-2009, a 383 percent decrease over three years. The highest number of incidents involved knives (755), significantly fewer than three years earlier (980), recording a 225 percent drop.
