This past weekend reminds us just how many people are actively involved in the protection of our nation. Indeed, there are just over 18,000 New Jersey citizens currently serving in some branch of our National Guard or reserve forces, according to the spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. There are 6,000 men and women serving in the Army National Guard, 2,300 in the Air National Guard, and just under 10,000 across the five other reserve units: Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Of those forces, 200 are currently deployed in southwest Asia, said Kryn Peter Westhoven, public affairs staff officer.
