Almost half of all New Jersey residents get at least moderate exercise, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System estimates that 47.5 percent of all Garden State adults exercise moderately for 30 or more minutes, five or more days per week, or exercise vigorously for 20 minutes, three or more days per week.
In 2009, more men said they get this amount of exercise than women (50.1 percent vs. 45.2 percent). Those people identifying themselves as white said they attained this level of exercise (50.3 percent), compared with blacks (43.3 percent) or Hispanics (38.7 percent). Education and income also seemed to play a role, since the number of people who responded affirmatively scaled higher as the level of education and income rose. Naturally, youth was a positive factor. New Jersey compares relatively poorly with the rest of the country: Nationwide, 51 percent of all residents say they met the criteria.
