Number of the Day: 4

After several years of being the country’s second-largest solar energy market, New Jersey has dropped to number four, behind California (49 percent), Arizona (12 percent) and Nevada (9 percent). According to Solarbuzz, a well-respected solar-related research and consulting company based in San Francisco, New Jersey now has 7 percent of the U.S.’s 12-gigawatt solar market. New Jersey’s seemingly improbable second-place ranking is primarily due to aggressive state policies that encouraged a solar installation market, while the drop to fourth place may have as much to do with the growth in solar generally. Solarbuzz estimates the market grew 39 percent in 2009.
