Anyone wondering how critical public transportation infrastructure is to New Jersey only has to realize that 10.3 percent of all workers use it for commuting, according to the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program. With an estimated 443,054 workers relying on public transit, Jersey ranks third after the District of Columbia (35.7 percent) and the state of New York (26.7 percent) in terms workers using public transportation to commute. According to the program, the rate at which New Jerseyans commute by public transit has increased from 9.3 percent in 2000.
