The Jersey shore in the summer is a fisherman’s playground, and we have the numbers to prove it. About 1.246 million recreational anglers were counted in NJ waters in 2008, the most recent year statistics were available, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration fisheries service. The largest number of anglers — 765,000 — lived near the coast; 456,000 lived out of state; and 26,000 were non-coastal NJ residents. The same study also tallied the number of recreational fishing expeditions at 6.76 million. Private boaters made up the largest portion, at 3.567 million, followed relatively closely by shore anglers at 2.804 million. The smallest number of fishing trips were logged by those taking boats for hire, with 388,000 in total.
