New Jerseyans are not known for their wide, welcoming smiles but most do take care of their teeth, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behaviorial Risk Factor Surveillance System. A 2008 study showed that 75.9 percent of New Jersey residents said they had visited the dentist within the last year. That compares favorably with the national average of 71.3 percent. Connecticut had the highest rate of dental visits at 80.3 percent, followed by Massachusetts (79.3 percent) Rhode Island (79 percent), Delaware (76.9 percent), New Hampshire (76.8 percent) and Michigan (76 percent). Ironically, the states known for their warmth and friendliness didn’t do that well in this study: Oklahoma (57.9 percent), Mississippi (59.5 percent) West Virginia (60.7 percent), Texas (62.6 percent) and Arkansas (63.5 percent) were at the bottom of the list.
