New Jersey ranks second only to California in having a strong package of gun laws, according to a recent report by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The antigun lobby ranked New Jersey high on its list of 50 states for implementing laws that prevent the sale of guns without background checks; help curb the illegal gun market; and reduce risks to children. Despite the Garden State’s high marks, the Brady campaign urges the state to do more, saying it achieved only 73 of 100 points on its scorecard. Still, New Jersey scored ahead of Massachusetts, which ranked third in the country with only 54 points. Ranking lowest: Utah, which was given 0 points, and Alaska, with only two points out of 100.
