We are a nation—and state—of immigrants: not just by heritage but by today’s population. According to the Washington D.C.-based Brookings Institution, 1,718,034 or 19.8 percent of New Jerseyans are foreign-born. That ranks New Jersey No. 3 among states in terms of foreign-born residents, right behind California and New York and just ahead Nevada and Florida. As a whole, 12.5 percent of the U.S. population is foreign born.
