The average size of a New Jersey farm is 71 acres, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. Although known as the Garden State, this makes New Jersey 48th in a ranking of states by farm size, ahead of only Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Still, New Jersey has 730,000 acres of farmland. As a whole, the U.S. has 2.2 million farms that total about 920 million acres.
