New Jersey smokers contributed $216,312,000 to the state budget through cigarette taxes in 2009, according to the NJ Department of Treasury. Despite a hike in the cigarette tax rate last July 1—smokers now pay $2.70 to the state for each pack of cigarettes—the total revenue from tobacco sales has been dropping for the past several years. Indeed, the Christie administration projects a continued drop in revenues to $200 million, despite a full year of the tax increase.
